Happy Buffyversary! March 10th marks 20 years since Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s first episode, “Welcome to the Hellmouth”, premiered on the WB. Am I the only one feeling old here?!
Start your day off right on March 10th by either tuning into Pop at 9 a.m. ET to watch the two part series premiere, or you can stream it on Netflix and binge watch all day. Make sure to check out BoxLunch.com that day for the “Sunnydale High Yearbook Contest”. Upload your high school yearbook photo and add an awesome Buffy quote in the form of a “senior quote”. You’ll want to take part in this one, as the prize is a trip to SDCC 2017! The best part is that if you happen to be making some purchases, you can also help those in need. BoxLunch is partnered with Feeding America, and for every $10 you spend in store or online, they provide a meal for someone who needs it. It looks like I’ve found a new place to buy gifts!
Whether you’re celebrating by way of gathering, shindig, or hootenanny, Fox Consumer Products has all the Buffy merchandise to make your party one that even the Bronze would envy. Whatever the party situation, you’ll need the appropriate attire. While there are many excellent Buffy tees out there, the one that will always be the best in my mind is the original Sunnydale High School gym tee from Ripple Junction. Normally I’m not one for school spirit, but this item is a classic and the perfect addition to any Buffy fan’s wardrobe.
Provide additional entertainment for your guests and play some Buffy trivia, or put out adult coloring books. You and your guests can help protect Sunnydale with “Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Board Game” from Jasco, available for $39.99, and in August, Upper Deck will be releasing “Legendary: A Buffy the Vampire Slayer Deck Building Game”. I’m pretty excited for this one, but at $59.99, I may hold off for a while. Dark Horse has a great BtVS adult coloring book for $14.99 and will be releasing “Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Big Bads & Monsters” in the fall for the same price, but you can pre-order it now for $13.49.
There is a good chunk of the new Buffy merch that won’t be available until later in the year. If you’re into cosplay or replicas get ready to Snoopy dance, because Hot Topic will have some goodies for you this summer. A replica of the pink sweater that Willow donned in “Doppelgangland” will be available for $42.90. If your style leans a bit more toward the Chosen One, you can snag Buffy’s red trench from “Graduation Day” for $99.90. My personal favorite is Faith’s season 3 jacket, which is pretty reasonably priced at $69.90. The items I may be most excited about are two ruled journals from Insight Editions this August. (One can never have too many journals.) Both are hardcover and priced at $18.99 (pre-order price is $14.59). One looks like the SHS yearbook, and the other like the Slayer Handbook. I love them both!
These are just a handful of the awesome Buffy products that are on the way. Needless to say, even 20 years later, Buffy still manages to be a relevant part of pop culture. Comment below and let us know how you plan to celebrate, or tweet me at @amlehr!
I wish I could hang out and binge all of Buffy but adulting kind of prevents that *sigh* I do love all the merchandise and the yearbook contest should be fun to check out. Thanks for a great write up about a great show. Very appropriate for International Women’s Day too 🙂
I like your article, very inspiring and thank you for your post
