One movie to rule them all…

The Hunger Games machine is in full force. After a staggering $155 million dollar intake this past opening weekend, it has become the third largest opening in history. Reviews were modest to positive, so word of mouth should keep it rolling for the next few weeks. Hunger Games launches a long season for pop culture properties that will make this year one to remember. So my poll for the week is which do you think will 2012 be most remembered for? Regardless of box office intake, which movie do you think will have the most pop culture significance in years to come?

  1. Which of these films will resonate the most in the years to come?

For perspective, I look back 30 years to the Great Geek Film Year of 1982. That year, we had E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL, STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN, POLTERGEIST, TRON, THE THING, CONAN THE BARBARIAN, DARK CRYSTAL and BLADE RUNNER. E.T. was a runwaway box office smash. It was the first film to outgross STAR WARS (1977). In contrast, John Carpernter’s THE THING slumped at the box office and BLADE RUNNER was considered a financial distaster. Yet those two films are beloved today and, you can argue, more influential than E.T.

So as to the films of 2012, we can only guess.

We’re a third of the way through the year. THE HUNGER GAMES did exceedingly well on opening weekend. But, will it resonate 5, 10, 20 years from now? I prefer the low budget CHRONICLE to THE HUNGER GAMES. My own personal taste.

As to the five films in the poll, PROMETHEUS sticks out to me. It’s Ridley Scott’s first science fiction film in 30 years. While his output in science fiction had been limited to just two films (ALIEN and BLADE RUNNER), they’re two of the greatest films ever made and hugely influential even to today’s audience. So I’ll pick PROMETHEUS.

    • I totally agree. In this CGI era, movie dollar success does not translate into long lasting pop culture impact. Thanks for voting and commenting!

  2. I chose, “The Hunger Games”.
I would like to have chosen, “The Avengers”. But, I know what I’ve seen in the past, and I know what I see Now, at Walmart.

Kids! In the past it was, “Harry Potter”. But today it’s, “Katniss Everdeen”. And the kids just can’t get enough. I suspect therefore, especially when talking “most pop culture significant for years to come”. That we’re going to be seeing a Lot more of Katniss Everdeen, and The Hunger Games. ~ CBL
